The guru of the Leningrad underground, Boris Koshelokhov, has come up with a plan to create one of the biggest works in the history of art: a 5,000-square-metre painting. The preparatory stages of his project are finished. Now it's a just a matter of finding a wall that's big enough. A rapidly-moving and formally innovative documentary.

Calder, sculpteur de l’air

F 2009, DVD, colour, 52’, OmeU

Director, Screenplay: François Lévy-Kuentz. Screenplay: Stephan Lévy-Kuentz. DoP: Olivier Raffet. Editor: Nicole Seres. Sound: Jacques Guillot. Music: Louis Sclavis.

Alexander Calder (1898-1976), one of the outstanding figures of modernism, revolutionised sculpture and freed it from its traditional constraints. Unfortunately, this contemporary and associate of Marcel Duchamp, Joan Miró and Piet Mondrian is too often seen only as the creator of his famous mobiles. Using Calder's original archives, this documentary film by François Lévy-Kuentz recounts the adventurous and multi-faceted life of this American artist, who conquered the international art world from his base in Paris and to whom the Centre Pompidou and the Whitney Museum in New York have both devoted retrospectives in 2009.

François Lévy-Kuentz
François Lévy-Kuentz was born in Paris and studied film at the Université Paris III. In addition to his own works, he has collaborated as a director on cultural television programs such as "Le cercle de minuit", "Rapptout", "Ramdam" and "Aux arts et cætera".
