Kunst Film Biennale

BILD-KUNST Award for Experimental Film

This year is the sixth time that young filmmakers have been called upon to enter their works in the competition for the 25,000-euro award for experimental film donated by the copyright collective Bild-Kunst. From the over 400 entries, a preliminary jury has chosen 32 films that extend the limits of experimental, narrative or documentary film in some striking way.

In four programmes, the KunstFilmBiennale is showing works by artists living in Germany who explore new devices and paths within the medium of film and are not fazed by the strategies of the cinematic avant-garde of previous decades. They are familiar with Hans Richter, Maja Deren and Bill Viola, but the powerful image-producing machines of our present-day culture, with which the filmmaking generation of today mainly works, overshadow these figures as a source of inspiration or productive friction.
